Marty Johnson likes to drink. Likes it enough he does it every night. His walk home from the bar tonight is going to be different though. Because tonight Marty is going to witness a crime and find something inside him he didn't know was still there.
'A Guy Walks Out Of A Bar' is the redemptive tale of one man's decision to stand for what he thinks is right. 1 part 'Falling Down', 1 part 'Death Wish', 2 parts Bourbon.

'A Guy Walks Out Of a Bar' is a hardboiled short from the author of 'Sunliner', 'Dear Suzanna', 'The Doorbell' and the 'Camera/Phone' and 'Guillotine!' stories.

A Guy Walks Out Of A Bar edition by Oliver Clarke Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

At the beginning of the story, the character of Marty Johnson wasn't impressive. Marty's best days seem to be behind him. Life had dealt him a couple of very hard knocks, he had been beaten down, and he had become too apathetic (and pathetic) to do anything about it.

But this was the story of one man, and the night he took a stand against evil.

The last two sentences seemed to detract from the effectiveness of the story, and left me wanting more (or less). I'm not sure if the story would have been better if it had ended before those two sentences, or if the story needed to continue a bit. The ending was humorous, but I just felt it ended in the wrong place, and that adding the two sentences just left unfinished business.

A Guy Walks Out Of A Bar edition by Oliver Clarke Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

What would you do if you happened across a crime in progress? Marty is faced with this question. This is a very enjoyable short story. The author depicts this situation well. If you are a fan of suspense, check it out.
A Guy Walks Out Of A Bar is a short story that focuses on crime and how things change. Even as things change for the worse, it shows that it is important to not just sit back and let it happen. Rather, it shows that you should stand up and do something to make things better.

The story is quite simple. Marty, the main character, walks out of a bar like every other night, but stumbles across what he thinks is a crime, and things take off from there.

Personally, I would have liked to see more emotion in the story. It was one of the few things it lacked and that nagged on me while I was reading. I found myself not caring as much about what happened in Marty's life as I would have liked. Towards the end, it also felt a bit rushed. After reading a lot of detail in the pages leading up to the climax, the end was too short and rather underwhelming. I would have liked to see it fleshed out a bit more.

That aside, I did like seeing the story progress and his outlook on life change, and the insight into his past intrigued me.

If you enjoy crime stories and are looking for a quick read, pick it up! After all, just because I nit-picked a few things doesn't mean it won't be perfect for you! My opinion is, after all, just my opinion.
This is a good short story about an older gentleman that had a routine that went on for years. The series of events which lead to him to be at the very spot and the wellness to reach out and help a stranger makes for a great read. Any one given the correct circumstances has the potential of being a hero.
Got me hooked early on with this passage "That instinct was kicking in now, grabbing his ear and shouting in it. Telling him to just walk away. Mind his own business. He didn't step back though." I liked the character involved so much I went on to get "Only One Way Out" in hopes it, too, will be as highly engaging.
