Having never read a book written by Ms. Romain, I wasn't sure what to expect. From the very first, we clearly understand that the heroine of the book, the Countess of Stratton, Caroline Graves is a "sleep-around" widow - certainly a different type of heroine than is found in most books of this genre.

I loved our Main Guy - Michael, Duke of Wyverne. He is a reclusive man whose interests run quite the opposite to most gentlemen of his day. Rejected by his libertine father and not understanding how to go about in society, Michael was never comfortable in any environment except the ducal country estate. He is a tinkerer, loving to dismantle stuff to figure out how and why things work. Because his father was a wastrel, spending all his money on gambling, women, etc., Michael has spent the years since his father's death attempting new ideas and technologies in order to get his estate out of debt and into profitability. Finally, he runs out of funds due to a year of extremely cold weather - conditions which make it impossible for him to continue on without bringing some major funds into his estate. Thus, his steward tells him, he must consider marrying an heiress... Very. Soon.

Michael reluctantly travels to London, where eleven years previously, he had attempted to become part of Polite Society with very little success. He never fit in and wasn't comfortable in the least - in fact, he has been accused of "madness" by some. Plus, he left behind a lovely woman, Caroline, who he has been unable to forget. For Caroline's part she has since been married to an elderly earl and is now widowed all before the age of thirty. Although her marriage to the earl was a marriage of convenience, he was kind enough to leave her very well off - she is a lovely, stylish, rich widow who enjoys her life and place in Society... somewhat.

It's obvious from the storyline that there is major history between Michael and Caroline - something that happened just before he left London 11 years ago. We also understand early on that Michael's difficulties in handling social situations, plus other personal attributes that he manifests - such as being very uncomfortable with being touched, might be diagnosed as a condition similar to Asperger's in this day and age. At any rate, having several family members diagnosed on the spectrum, I recognize a few of the symptoms common to those with such a diagnosis. He is an amazing man - bright, lovable but altogether clueless of how to go about in Society. Although it's obvious there's painful history between Michael and Caroline, she decides she will help him in his efforts to gain a wealthy wife.

To Caroline's credit, she tries very hard to help Michael as she steers him through social settings with patience and kindness. It's obvious she's loved him for years, but although Michael proposes to her several times and from his POV, she's the only person he has ever wanted, she rejects him as she continues in her attempts to set him up with potential matches. Caroline wants to be needed and she wants to know she's loved. Michael has a hard time getting to the place that he can say exactly what she wants to hear - partly because he's a man but mostly because the intricacies of basic communication are extremely difficult for him.

I would give this book 5 stars for Michael's lovely character and persona, however, I didn't care for Caroline's attitude about a lot of things, including her continued rejection of Michael - there just seemed to be something missing. It became dull after a time. Also, she needed to kick Stratton (her nephew by marriage and who constantly bugged her) in the rear end or at least allow Michael to do so - Stratton's character didn't seem necessary to the book - neither foil, nor villain, nor interesting in any way.

To Charm a Naughty Countess Matchmaker Trilogy Theresa Romain 0760789242342 Books Reviews

As the title said, the first half of the story was, indeed, enchanting and emotional...some of the most beautiful, at times downright lyrical writing I've read in a while. Then the novel ran out of steam and it became a slog.

All because Caroline refused to accept Michael's proposal. I understood the first couple of refusals ~ Michael was fixated on his finances and was determined to marry money. But not the next two or two-hundred (so it seemed to me because it went on forever.) She was holding out for a verbal "I love you."

Michael seemed to have some disorder verging on the low end of Aspergers which made it exceedingly difficult for him to express himself in a normal fashion. Caroline understood his problem so why did she insist on carrying her refusals on forever and a day? Where was her kindness?

Then, the intrusion of Caroline's nephew-in-law into the story, particularly during the second half was irritating. He added nothing to the story and he became tedious. In fact, I think he really detracted from the storyline during the second half of the novel.

Ms. Romain is capable of writing soaring fiction. The first half of this novel was wonderful and demonstrated her brilliance. The second half.....

Enjoy your reading! )
This wonderful, beautifully-written book is a story of conflicting needs and wants and the resolution of those needs and wants makes for some fascinating reading. I adored this book and the characters in it. It seemed as if there was a treat on every page - lovely word pictures one right after another.

The Duke of Wyverne needs to marry wealth, but wants the widowed Lady Caroline. Lady Caroline needs to be loved, but wants the Duke of Wyverne. Sounds like there should be no problem - but, of course there is. The Duke has a problem with loving another and Lady Caro will not consider his proposal without love. It seems the two share a history that goes back 11 years to before her marriage. This history starts out as a mystery that is slowly revealed as the story progresses. Lovely timing on the author's part.

The Duke has psychological problems - social anxiety, panic issues, restless energy, and an aversion to being touched. In an age prior to ready diagnosis, his reputation for eccentricity has him lampooned as `Mad Michael.' I, for one, loved this Hero. And, clearly, so did Lady Caroline, although she had good reason not to. Having been involved in some mysterious scandal years ago, they haven't seen each other in 11 years, so it is a shock to them both when they again meet.

Michael is awkward, nervous and reticent, but admits to Lady Caro his rather desperate need for a rapid infusion of money - hence, a wealthy wife. Lady Caro has been left a comfortable fortune, but insists upon her next relationship, if any, being a love match. Although she has clear grounds for wreaking revenge on Michael, who hurt her deeply in the past, she opts for a different path - which is what makes this book so absorbing. Her kindness to him - and her determination to assist him find a wife - and his gradual transformation - well, you just have to read this book!

I love a wounded hero, and an emotionally wounded hero is especially intriguing. This author has done the most magnificent job of portraying the anxieties of this man! I have never read anything that comes even remotely close. It reminds me somewhat of the heroes in Song for Sophia by Densley, or London's Devil Takes a Bride - both of which I loved, but I think this is even better. The details are outstanding - just seems so entirely real. It is an uplifting, emotionally satisfying book with a perfectly sigh-worthy HEA.

I couldn't close this review without adding that Chapter 13 is one of the most moving, terrifically romantic love scenes that I've encountered. Oh, my goodness, it was beautiful - perfectly done, in my book. I can't rate this book high enough, and I don't possess the skill to properly describe it, but it is simply lovely and I enjoyed every minute I spent reading it.
