This is a more than wonderful story. I read it as a 13 year old, loved it and have looked for it again and again for the last 30 or so years. I am now 65 and I never found it again until I saw it on Amazon. I received it last evening, have been reading it today, and I am truly overwhelmed by it. It is even better than I remembered. I will entrust it to my daughter and 3 older granddaughters to read. They will love it too. However, since I keep saying how thankful I am to own it over and over as I read it today, my husband wants to read it when I am through.

The Ark Margot BenaryIsbert Clara Winston Richard Winston 9780152039011 Books Reviews

A story for its time and ours
an excellent book, reminds me of my own childhood....
I received this as expected and it was in good shape for a used book.
Excellent read -- it really brings the post-war aftermath into focus and although the younger sister is annoying, I still think it was a worthwhile read for anyone - -especially those interested in the era.
I read this book as a kid and remembered it when I read a nonfiction book about living in post WW2 Europe. The story is of a genre I enjoy -creating a comfortable home with very little. Like Robinson Crusoe or Little House in the Big Woods, it details creating the necessities of life with skill and ingenuity.
Here is a wonderful, historical, and heartwarming story for all ages. The story focuses on a family in Germany after WWII. The extreme difficulties that the children experience are gripping and tearful. I have read this story to my children 4 times aloud through the years and highly recommend it to your family. This book is out of print so snatch a copy for your collection.
My sixth-grade teacher read this to our class many years ago, and it made enough of an impact then that I recently hunted it down to give to my own children. Reading it as an adult, I find it to be poignant in a way I couldn't have as a child. The Lechow family's comfortable and normal life has been destroyed by WWII. Members of the family are missing -- one as a prisoner and one through death. The remaining family members are refugees forced to live in the attic of a stranger. Opportunities the older children had before the war are gone, and now they have to pick up their lives and try to find new dreams.

Despite that bleak environment for the story, this is an uplifting book, speaking of the resilence of the human heart and of the power of nature to help in healing even the deepest hurts. One of my favorite scenes is when Margret has been up all night caring for dying puppies, and as she goes about her chores the next morning, she sees a newborn foal. "'Life!' Margret thought. It was too much for her; it overpowered her...." I always think of this as a turning point for Margret, when she will be able to let go of the painful past and realize life can be beautiful, after all.

The book is rather old-fashioned in its nostalgic tone, and some of the characters, particularly Mrs. Lechow, are a little too perfect to be completely realistic. However, I'm willing to forgive the book those flaws because of its strengths. In our media-saturated, instant gratification, fantasy-oriented culture, this book seems to me to be a refreshing reminder that there IS substance in the midst of all the glitz, if we only take the time to notice it.
