We first meet the widowed Lucy at her grandmother, Nonna' s funeral. Lucy later receives a visit from her lawyer friend Jack.
Nonna wanted Lucy to make a trip to Italy and deliver a small picture and letter to Paulo, her Italian first love. Nonna had fled Italy thinking he had died at the hands of the Germans, ten years later a chance meeting with a mutual friend reveals he had lived.Too late, both were married with children. The story moves from current time with Jack and Lucy to the past when Nonna was still young and in Italy during the war.
After a chapter or two getting used to the transition from past to present the book is a warm and interesting semi historical romance fiction. I Will look for more from this author.

The Lost Art of Second Chances edition by Courtney Hunt Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This book was done for two women one the Grandmother Belladonna and what her last request made her Grand-daughter, widow Lucy Parker come to acknowledge. Belladonna’s last wishes where that a painting she had in her possession be returned to Paolo LaRosa in Ali d’Angelo, Italy. Who is Paolo? Why is the painting so important? Bella also asked Lucy’s childhood friend Jack Hamilton who is divorced to go with her. How did Jack and Lucy lose the love they had as children? This is a story of finding what one has lost because life saw fit to separate you. I did not want to put this book down ! I was gifted a copy for an honest review barwatts@telus.net
This book shows us what changes as you age. How do you adjust to them.
Lucky Parker has her 40th birthday, her husband is dead and now Nonna Belladonna has died. At the funeral her
childhood friend and first trush Jack Hamilton tells her that he was her grandmother's lawyer. Turns out her
grandmother has left her and usual bequest. The story explains Nokia's life in Italy and why she sends Lucy there. Jack
offers to travel with her and we discover his true reasons. Courtney has given us a
wonderful story of love, family and friendships.

Loved this book. Blending of the two generations was done well. Enjoy reading books with incite into World War Two experiences as it was my era. Wish the younger generation would read this type of novel. Ms Hunt did a good job with the romance angle.
The Lost Art of Second Chances is an amazing story about two people who did not take the chance to follow their hearts, hopes and dreams; and two people who are given a second chance to chase after those hopes and dreams. Lucy and Jack definitely needed the second chance. I was so glad to read a book that went back into the past. I know there are many books like that, but this has it's own way of doing that, and i enjoyed it.
Ms. Hunt writes a lovely story of couples finding the courage to follow their hearts as well as finding the courage to carry on when great love is lost. The story alternates between Italy in WWII and present day New England and tells the story of Lucy and her quest to fulfill her grandmother's wish to deliver a letter and a painting to a man from her grandmother's past. In her search Lucy comes to terms with her own past and opens her heart to new possibilities and old loves. Well done Ms. Hunt, I look forward to reading more of your work. I received a copy from the Scout program.
I read this book about two years ago and read it again today and it touched me as deeply as the first time around. The pain of loss through war experienced by Belladonna and Paola haunts one just as lost opportunities experienced by Jack and Lucy tear at one's heart. If only ....... However, Belladonna sees what no one else does, and she persuades Jack to accompany Lucy on a trip to Italy after her death to return a painting to Paola. The quest is not as easy as first hoped, but along the way they learn more about Lucy's grandmother and her love story. Although Jack and Lucy accomplish what they set out to do, the trip does not end well. Jack has to rethink his strategy to win Lucy the second time around and Lucy has to let go of past disappointments before she can move forward. Although romantic love was central to this story, it is the romance of Italy, of divine food and interpersonal relationships that draw the reader in and touches the heart. More than a love story, The Lost Art of Second Chances is a romantic experience. It is well written and carries the reader through the changes of scene between the past and the present, with tender gentleness. I loved every moment of this book and was sorry when it came to an end.
When Lucy's Nonna passes, Lucy is left with a mysterious bequest, to travel to Italy, find a man, and give him a letter and a painting. Her best friend Jack agrees to go with her.
The book alternates between Nonna Belladonna's story and Lucy's story. I found parts of it a bit slow but it was generally okay. Jack is a sweetheart and he has a lot to put up with in Lucy's fretting over their relationship.
My biggest problem was the inconsistencies and omissions in the plot. Paolo is an American studying at Yale though he goes to New York at age sixteen after his brother dies in the war. Why does he stay in Italy after the war and not go back to complete his studies? How did Lucy and Jack find him when they were just wandering around Tuscany? Did Lucy speak English or not; the priest said she was his translator, but it didn't seem like she spoke English until she got to the US. Why didn't the Germans question a young fit man being in the village?
There were a lot of coincidences also. They just happen to find the one survivor running the cafe where they eat in Florence. And so on.
If you just want some light reading, this is fine. I just thought it had too much fluff and not enough substance.
