The earth is being destroyed by rogue asteroids. In desparation, a generation space ship is fashioned by hollowing out an asteroid. A million+ earthers are put into cryogenic sleep in the asteroid which leaves our solar system in the hopes that the AI pilot can find a suitable new home for mankind. It does, but the world is already populated by an advanced species quite similar to humans, but evolved as avians rather than mammals. The avians generously offer an area of their home world for the humans to settle. The dramatic tension in the book derives from the problems in integrating the highly ethical avian society with the stranded and dependant humans. Thus the book raises a lot of socialogical issues which are discussed at considerable length. It gets a little preachy at times but I found the characters engaging.

Earth becomes uninhabitable, an ark (The Lamikorda) makes its way into space, a planet inhabited by aliens is happened upon, the humans are taken in and there's social conflict but everything works out in the end. Ho, hum. The aliens are avian but otherwise there's nothing new here. The author spends an inordinate time with their language and that's a bit annoying. I did read it through in hopes of a twist but, no, there is none.
